| Yam is a good source of energy; 100 g provides 118 calories. It mainly composed of complex carbohydrates and soluble dietary fiber. Together, they raise blood sugar levels rather very slowly than simple sugars and therefore, recommended as the low glycemic index healthy food. In addition, dietary fiber helps reduce constipation, decrease bad (LDL) cholesterol levels by binding to it in the intestines and prevent colon cancer risks by preventing toxic compounds in the food from adhering to the colon mucosa. Further, the tuber is indeed one of the vegetables rich sources of minerals like copper, calcium, potassium, iron, manganese, and phosphorus. 100 g provides about 816 mg of Potassium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids, which helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure by countering hypertensive effects of sodium. Copper is required in the production of red blood cells. Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase. Iron is required for red blood cell formation. | |

| Yams, often confused with sweet potatoes, are a tuber native to Africa and Asia. They vary in size, and are generally cylindrical in shape. Yam flesh ranges in color from tan to pink or purple. Yams tend to be dry and starchy, providing a healthy energy source with important nutritional benefits. Yams are an excellent source of vitamins C and B6, with 1 cup providing approximately 20 percent of your daily requirement of each of these nutrients. Vitamin C assists in tissue repair and wound healing, and its antioxidant properties help offset the cell-damaging effects of free radicals in your body. Protein metabolism requires vitamin B6, and B6 also functions in the synthesis of red blood cells. Thiamin, another B vitamin, helps you convert carbohydrates to energy, and 1 cup of yams supplies 10 percent of your daily need for this vitamin.

| -Cancer Prevention The presence of the antioxidant vitamin C in yams helps protect the body from free radicals that cause oxidative stress. Oxidative stress, or "cellular rust," is associated with many different types of cancer, including lung, mouth, throat, colon, stomach and esophagus. Vitamin C also aids in the generation of vitamin E (another useful antioxidant).
-Eye Health One cup of yams contains almost thirty percent of the daily recommendation of vitamin C. The body uses vitamin C for protection from immune system deficiencies and may reduce the chances of macular degeneration, a condition in which fine vision deteriorates, resulting in central vision loss and is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 50.
-Weight Control Rich in fiber, yams fill you up nicely without filling out your hips and waistline. Yams' complex carbohydrates are broken down into sugars, released and absorbed into the bloodstream at a gradual rate, keeping you satisfied longer, and they are very low in calories too.
-Brain and Nervous System The potassium so abundant in yams is very important in regulating muscle and nerve activity. Both the frequency and degree to which our muscles contract and our nerves become excitable depend heavily on the right amount of potassium in the body. Many of our muscle and nerve cells have specialized channels for moving potassium in and out of the cell. When movement is blocked, or when potassium is lacking in the diet, muscle and nerve activity can be compromised.
-Blood Sugar Regulation Yams' complex carbohydrates are broken down into sugars, released and absorbed into the bloodstream at a gradual rate. This prevents blood sugar levels from spiking too high too quickly and dipping too low. They are also a good source of manganese, which helps with carbohydrate metabolism and is a cofactor in a number of enzymes important in energy production.

| Most diets don't get close to the 20 to 35 grams of fiber recommended for health, the Harvard School of Public Health reports. Fiber helps you digest your food properly, which can cut your chances of getting constipated or developing hemorrhoids. When you eat fiber regularly, you are also less likely to get heart disease and certain types of cancer. A 1-cup serving of sweet potatoes supplies 6.6 grams of fiber and a cup of yams provides 5.3 grams.

•Wild yam has been used as a form of traditional herbal Chinese medicine for a long time. It is mainly used for the proper functioning of the renal and the female endocrine system. For instance, its root has been traditionally given to lactating women. However, there is no clear evidence to support this theory and studies are still going on to establish a connection between diosgenins (a chemical substance found in yam) and the female endocrine function. •Wild yam also helps decrease water retention and alleviates nausea during pregnancy. •Yams have high levels of Vitamin B6, which is a popular supplement for women suffering from depression due to premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Regular intake of Vitamin B6 is also beneficial against a number heart conditions and stroke, as they help in the breakdown of a chemical substance called homocysteine. High levels of this substance cause direct damage to the walls of the blood vessels, leading to a number of health problems.
