| In France, haricot is the name for bean in general. In Britain, Australia, and the rest of the Western world, it's the bean used to make the classic baked bean. Those sickly sweet beans may have put many off eating a bean ever again. If this is how you feel give them another chance. This delicious white bean has a delicate flavour and will assume most flavours you give them. Not only that, they're extremely good for you. Pros: Haricot, or white beans, are a good all-round food. They are rich in soluble fibre which helps to reduce the level of 'bad' cholesterol in the blood, thus cutting the risk of heart disease, strokes and even diabetes. Beans have an extremely low glycaemic index, which means that it takes the body longer to break down the complex carbohydrate into simple sugars and hunger pangs are kept at bay longer. This, and because they are very low in fat and cholesterol, makes beans a perfect food for dieters and diabetics. As an added bonus, eating beans will give you potassium, iron, magnesium and manganese.

| Haricot beans are small dry white beans which are a staple in baked bean dishes along with soups and chilis. There are numerous alternate names for haricot beans including Boston beans, navy beans, pearl haricots, and fagioli. The beans are roughly oval shaped and flattened, with a pure white edible skin. The flavor of haricot beans is relatively bland. Vegetarians in particular use haricot beans extensively, and they can supplement and enrich an assortment of dishes. These small white beans are perfect for making baked beans. Dry navy beans are available year-round in prepackaged containers as well as bulk bins. Canned navy beans are also available year round at local markets.

| As we all are aware, pulses and legumes contain high percentage of proteins and carbohydrates. The same nutrient data is applicable to haricot beans. Serving 100 g of dried haricot beans provide 21.5 g proteins, 45.5 g carbohydrates, 2.4 g fiber and 1.5 g fats. Other highly appropriated haricot beans nutrition facts are the presence of high amounts of calcium (about 180 mg in 100 g beans) and iron (about 6.8 mg in 100 g beans). In short, haricot beans are good sources of mineral nutrients required for normal functioning of the body.
Coming to calories, a half cup serving of cooked haricots provide 100 calories. However, this calorie count may vary, depending upon the ingredients used in cooking. Considering their nutrition facts, it won't be wrong to say that these ubiquitous beans are staple food items for pure vegetarians. Low in saturated fats and sodium, the health benefits of haricot beans are reducing intestinal problems, lowering cholesterol and controlling blood pressure.

| Haricot beans are small, oval, plump and creamy-white with a mild flavour and smooth, buttery texture. In the US, they are known as navy beans and are the classic ingredient in Boston baked beans. Haricot beans are widely used in the cooking of countries such as France, Spain, Portugal and South America. With little flavour of their own, they absorb other aromas and flavours easily, which makes them popular beans to use in bean salads, vegetable soups, slow-cooked dishes such as cassoulet or bean purées.

| Some people don't enjoy the health benefits of beans as they should because they often consider them an 'incomplete' protein.
This is because they don't contain all the essential amino acids that we need in our diet, as opposed to 'complete' protein found in foods of animal origin, such as meat, fish, dairy products and eggs, which contain ample amounts of the essential amino acids.
Although it's important to get all the amino acids, both essential and non-essential, it's not necessary to get them from meat. In fact, because of its high fat content - as well as the use of antibiotics and other chemicals in the raising of poultry and cattle - most of the animal protein should be eaten only in moderation. | |
