With peanut allergies on the rise, more and more people are steering clear of these nuts altogether. There’s no arguing that peanut allergies can be extremely serious, and if you are allergic, you should certainly stay away from them. But if you’re not, you may want to take a second look at peanuts. They’re a great source of protein. And they’re also extraordinarily high in polyphenols — the Arnold Schwarzenegger of the antioxidant family. Yes, peanuts are high in fat. But now we know that, like avocados, they are high in the “good” kind — monounsaturated fat. They also contain magnesium, folate, vitamin E, copper, arginine, and fiber — all of which are known to lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Another one of peanuts’ virtues is that they contain high amounts of resveratrol. Studies have shown that resveratrol can inhibit the growth of colorectal tumor cells. Since the other primary source for this compound is red wine, it’s a challenge for people who don’t drink alcohol to get enough: Peanuts to the rescue! Roasting actually increases the antioxidant content in peanuts by up to 22 percent. Since most people prefer roasted nuts, this is a great discovery.

Peanuts contain a good amount of folate. Repeated studies have shown that women who had a daily intake of 400 micrograms of folic acid before and during early pregnancy reduced their risk of having a baby born with a serious neural tube defect by up to 70%.
One fourth cup of peanuts can supply the body with 35% of the DV of manganese, a mineral which plays a role in fat and carbohydrate metabolism, calcium absorption, and blood sugar regulation.

Most benefits of peanut are health-wise, below are few of these benefits:
Peanuts for heart. Peanut helps prevent heart disease. Studies have proven that regular peanut consumption helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease without weight gain. Peanuts contain fiber, mono-saturated fatty acids, and other nutrients that can help lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Peanuts for weight loss. Peanuts promote weight loss. Research has shown that snacking on peanuts and peanut butter is an effective way to control hunger without weight gain. Peanuts and peanut butter are two of the top foods that give a feeling of satiety or fullness. A Purdue University study published in the International Journal of Obesity showed that subjects who ate peanuts and peanut butter showed that they were able to self-adjust their caloric intake spontaneously and did not add extra calories to their daily diets. Just add a vigorous exercise regime and you will lose weight in no time.
Peanuts lower cholesterol levels. Scientific evidence suggests that eating 1.5 ounces per day of peanuts as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease. Furthermore, eating 1-2 ounces of peanuts five or more times a week can lower total cholesterol, LDL, and triglyceride levels. The effect was greatest when peanuts or peanut oil was substituted for saturated fats.
Peanuts for protein. Peanuts are rich in protein and other vitamins such as Vitamin D. Peanuts have very high protein content and significant amounts of iron, zinc, and magnesium. In particular, their high protein and iron content makes them an excellent replacement for red meat in any diet, particularly for vegans and vegetarians.

Also known as ground nuts, peanuts, along with beans and peas are members of the legume family which are the best sources of protein in the plant kingdom. Peanuts are found in a wide variety of products. They can be eaten salted, dry roasted, boiled and even raw. They can be found in peanut brittle, peanut butter and candy bars and is often a major ingredient in mixed nuts.

A food high in protein, monosaturated fat, and the antioxidant reservratrol, the peanut is showing itself to be an able protector of the human heart and blood vessels. One study of subjects who consumed a diet that emphasized peanuts, in both nut and butter form, for one month demonstrated that their risk of heart disease dropped by around 21 percent compared to those people who ate typical American fare. A second study, in which the subjects were given two or three servings of peanuts or peanut butter for one month, also found reductions in the "bad" LDL cholesterol with maintenance of "good" HDL cholesterol. Triglycerides, which are another risk factor for heart disease, also dropped. Subjects who ate a peanut-based diet had double the benefits of those who had a low-fat diet.

Peanuts provide enough fiber and water to help keep a person regular. Plant fiber in particular helps keep the good bacteria in the gut well fed so that it can do its job in effectively breaking down the foods we eat.
