| You should study the form of the poem. 1.Consider the sound and rhythm of the poem. Is there a metrical pattern? If so, how regular is it? Does the poet use rhyme? What do the meter and rhyme emphasize? Is there any alliteration? Assonance? Onomatopoeia? How do these relate to the poem's meaning? What effect do they create in the poem?
2. Are there divisions within the poem? Marked by stanzas? By rhyme? By shifts in subject? By shifts in perspective? How do these parts relate to each other? How are they appropriate for this poem?
3.How are the ideas in the poem ordered? Is there a progression of some sort? From simple to complex? From outer to inner? From past to present? From one place to another? Is there a climax of any sort?
4. What are the form and genre of this poem? What should you expect from such a poem? How does the poet use the form?

| These are some techniques to understand the poem.
- Understanding the techniques that poetry use in the poem. Does he use simile? metaphor? personification in the poem? etc. - Reading a Poem Aloud. To begin, read the poem aloud. Read it more than once. Listen to your voice, to the sounds the words make. Do you notice any special effects? Do any of the words rhyme? Is there a cluster of sounds that seem the same or similar? - Don’t Skim. Unlike the newspaper or a textbook, the point of poetry isn't to cram information into your brain. We can’t repeat it enough: poetry is an experience. If you don’t have the patience to get through a long poem, no worries, just start with a really short poem. Understanding poetry is like getting a suntan: you have to let it sink in. When you glance at Shmoop’s “Detailed Summary,” you’ll see just how loaded each line of poetry can be. - Memorize. “Memorize” is such a scary word, isn't it? It reminds us of multiplication tables. Maybe we should have said: “Tuck the poem into your snugly memory-space.” Or maybe not. At any rate, don’t tax yourself: if you memorize one or two lines of a poem, or even just a single cool-sounding phrase, it will start to work on you in ways you didn't know possible. You’ll be walking through the mall one day, and all of a sudden, you’ll shout, “I get it!” Just not too loud, or you’ll get mall security on your case. - Be Patient. You can’t really understand a poem that you've only read once. You just can’t. So if you don’t get it, set the poem aside and come back to it later. And by “later” we mean days, months, or even years. Don’t rush it. It’s a much bigger accomplishment to actually enjoy a poem than it is to be able to explain every line of it. Treat the first reading as an investment – your effort might not pay off until well into the future, but when it does, it will totally be worth it. Trust us. - “Look Who’s Talking.” Ask the most basic questions possible of the poem. Two of the most important are: “Who’s talking?” and “Who are they talking to?” If it’s a Shakespeare sonnet, don’t just assume that the speaker is Shakespeare. The speaker of every poem is kind of fictional creation, and so is the audience. Ask yourself: what would it be like to meet this person? What would they look like? What’s their “deal,” anyway? Shmoop will help you get to know a poem’s speaker through the “Speaker” section found in each study guide. - Never Be Intimidated. Regardless of what your experience with poetry in the classroom has been, no poet wants to make his or her audience feel stupid. It’s just not good business, if you know what we mean. Sure, there might be tricky parts, but it’s not like you’re trying to unlock the secrets of the universe. Heck, if you want to ignore the “meaning” entirely, then go ahead. Why not? If you’re still feeling a little timid, let Shmoop’s “Why Should I Care” section help you realize just how much you have to bring to the poetry table.

| In my opinion, I think you have to read a lot of peom, try to understand the old English and remember the old word and use in the poem. Most of the word in the poem use the old words like O, thou, art etc. So you have to understand it.

| Poetry is considered as an imaginary writing. The ways to understand each poem well are to use your own imagination and your connotative (indirect)-meaning inference. A poet who wrote each poem in the past implies some possible meanings to all readers so if you want to have deep understanding in poems, you should be more logical that is you ask yourself about the WH questions about the poems you read, then you understand the surface meanings of them, after that you try to understand the connotative words or implication of a words in spite of easy words, finally you are able to understand the deep meanings as well as the tone, the purpose and the poet's attitudes.

| Learning to Understand Poetry High-school students are often intimidated by poetry. Often, their dislike is the result of a lack of knowledge. Many students simply don't know how to handle poetry. However, students can, with little difficulty, begin to appreciate poetry. They simply need to be taught the basic structures and techniques that underlie this form of literature. Structure Begin by showing the student the overarching structure of the poem. Most poems are separated into stanzas. Many students may not even understand the concept of a stanza, so this is a great place to begin. Introduce a stanza as a group of lines connected in some way, normally by rhyme scheme or theme. Rhythm Next, help your student to understand the poem’s rhythm. Most English poetry is written in iambic pentameter. Iambic rhythm consists of a short syllable followed by a long syllable. Pentameter simply means that there are five iambs per line. The first line in William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 provides a wonderful example of iambic pentameter: Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? In this sentence, the emphasis is on the second, fourth, sixth, eight, and tenth syllables while the first, third, fifth, seventh, and ninth syllables are unaccented. The same pattern is utilized for the rest of the poem. Rhyme Scheme It is also important to teach high-school students to interpret rhyme scheme. Although not all poems utilize rhyming lines, many, especially those of the Elizabethan and Restoration period, do. Students need to be taught to associate a letter to each individual line-end sound. The rhyme scheme of Sonnet 18, for instance, can be described as abab cdcd efef gg. Even poems whose line endings do not rhyme utilize other sorts of rhymes, such as alliteration and onomatopoeia. Students should be taught to appreciate the sounds created by such rhyme within a poem’s lines. These sounds provide the poem with continuity and often reflect the mood or theme of the poem. Techniques to Understand Message Teach your student to recognize the methods by which a poem’s message is conveyed. Metaphor and simile are terms easily understood. Most students will quickly be able to recognize these within a poem. Personification is another commonly used technique in poetry. As your students learn to recognize these techniques at work, they will quickly begin to enjoy, or at least understand, poetry. Poetry does not have to be painful. It can be taught in an enjoyable way. Students will learn to love this timeless form of literature once they are able to grasp its basic workings. One helpful resource for poetry is Poetry.org. Once students know what to search for in a poem, they will begin to truly appreciate the beauty contained in its lines. Kullasatree 010 4EN | |
