We always talk about balanced diet and also go that extra mile to include all the nutrients required by our body to keep healthy. The job is tougher when we have to convince our little ones into having their regular dose of veggies, fruits and pulses. A better awareness of different nutrient groups will not only help us maintain a balanced diet but also to sell this to our prodigies. Each of the nutrient groups ie Carbohydrates, Proteins, Mineral Salts, Vitamins, Fiber and Water has its own unique role in aiding our body’s healthy functioning. Carbohydrates: As the name suggest, Carbohydrates contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. There are two subgroups of carbohydrates ie simple carbohydrate (sugar) and complex carbohydrates (polysaccharides). Simple carbohydrates provide instant energy and their good sources are sweets or cakes. Complex carbohydrates are not sweet and are used to store energy. Bread, rice, cereal, pasta are good sources of complex carbohydrates.
