In the modern age of information, reading truly is a fundamental survival skill. Here are ten tips that anyone can use to improve their reading skills:
1. Find something to read. Examples include a children's book, a newspaper article, a short story.
2. Sound out each letter as best you can and you will notice they form some sort of word.
3. Find a place to read where you can concentrate. This may be someplace secret where no one will bother you, or simply your home at a time when it is quiet.
4. Begin your reading by looking at the pictures, or listening to the music to get a feel for what you are going to be reading about.
5. Start with titles, names, or other larger print items that you may know or ever thought about.
6. Read as much as you are able. When you start getting bored or need a break, take one. Reading should be fun and enjoyable, don't force it. After your break, return to where you were, and continue.
7. Reread the material. It is okay to reread something if you do not understand it fully the first time.
8. Go to the library and pick up lots of books. Pick books depending on your reading level, no matter what your age.
9. Read the page carefully. Don't rush, take your time. Most people think that skimming the page(skimming means to just scan the whole page and hardly take in a couple of words)is a way of fast reading, but this is definitely not true.

- Read aloud. Reading aloud is a great way to slow down while reading. Slower reading usually means more comprehension, because you have more time to process what you're reading. An added benefit of slow reading is that you get to see the words on the page (visual learning) and hear the same words spoken aloud (audio learning).
- Write down words you don't know, or interesting phrases on their own pages. You'll probably want to check the meanings of the words later, and you never know if you could use those phrases.
- Start with books at or below your level, not with books above your level. It's like being thrust in a chess match with a master when you've only just started playing. Of course you're not going to do well when that's the matchup. Start with books at your level; you shouldn't be straining to figure out what words mean, or reading sentences over and over again..
Always go to the library as much as possible, whether it is after school, or at lunch try to go to the library a lot!
- Learn what works best for you, whether that is locking yourself in your room, reading out loud. Try many different approaches.
- Ask questions. If this is assigned reading and you don't understand something you have read, discuss it with classmates or a teacher or parent. If it's not assigned, consider finding a discussion group, real or online, or a

The normal reading style that you might use for reading a novel is to read in detail, focusing on every word in sequence from start to finish.
